Teaching Philosophy
“Behind you, the love of your ancestors
Before you, the trail to decolonization
Around you, the strength of your people
Within you, the light to heal.”- Whitney Alphonse Manuel (Instagram)
My teaching philosophy is based on the experiences that have been shaped from the Elders, and knowledge keepers of my community. To always remember and give thanks to the ones who helped create the person I am today. Growing up in a small community was priceless, the opportunity to grasp the knowledge of our language and culture, and also having the opportunity to grow up with my grandparents. This quote resonates with my philosophy because with everything I do, I always remember my grandparent’s teachings: They have taught me to be proud of who I am, to always practice my culture, to always speak my language, and to always protect your home.
I believe I am a driven lifelong learner, dreaming of decolonizing our education for our Indigenous learners. I began this journey as a mother, an Educator in Early Childhood Education, and now have laddered to become an Indigenous Elementary teacher. The second part of the quote matches my vision to naturalize Indigenous teachings in all teaching subjects, and to also model this to teachers who need the support.
With this intention, my students will learn the history of Indigenous people, and how resilient we are. The students in my classroom will have the opportunity to learn about Indigenous teachings in all of their subjects. This way, the students in my classroom will not only feel safe, but they will also feel empowered because I will let them be proud of who they are. That being said, they will break cycles, and become the best versions of themselves.
